Happy Halloween

I’m finally back home after a long weekend of Halloween themed wedding fun. The ceremony and party were fun, but somewhere in the mix of all the information about the party, I didn’t get the memo that it wasn’t really a costume party, rather more of a masquerade ball. So most of the people were dressed really fancy then had extravagant masks. And then there was the group of people that thought it was a costume party and dressed in stuff like a green super hero, cops, ninja, or me:

Flo, the Progressive Insurance Girl

halloween 2010

Aaron was a ninja, but his mask was pulled up in this pic.

I felt a tad out of place, but whatever. Halloween is my least favorite holiday. I did get a lot of compliments on my costume and one girl even wanted her picture with me!

I made the trek back to Bellingham today – a nice 4.5 hour drive… My legs needed to move, so I took them on a 4 mile run. I started my run right as the trick-or-treaters were coming out. I saw some cute ones! I kind felt like a werido though, dressed in all black running the neighborhood streets while kids are trick-or-treating…

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Cool Run

Once again I forgot 3 Things Thursday, so I'm just going to skip it - sorry friends.

I'm in Camas, WA right now at my boyfriend's parents house. The wedding festivites start today with the ceremony at 1:15. The Bride and Groom are doing a very, very small ceremony at the courthouse in Portland today then the big costume reception tomorrow.

I know there will be delicious food to be eaten both today and tomorrow (homemade Indian food and pie!), so I went out for a 4 mile run at Lacamas Lake.  It was a beautiful run - cool air, semi-sunny skies and fall foliage everywhere. It is just at the point where the air is cold enough to kind of hurt my ears and lungs - almost time for headbands and gloves.

Some Google Images of the trail I ran on, didn't run with my iPhone.

End of OktoberFast

Yesterday's Daily Sweat: Run 4.3 miles with 5 .25 mile pick ups, weight lift

I swear Active.com read my last post and then posted this article about candy from Fit Sugar on their Facebook page. Ugh, I really didn't need to see those numbers - it makes eating the candy a lot less fun. boo.

I did my last OktoberFast iron pumping session last night. In total I did 9 days - 4 days short of my goal. BUT I do feel STRONGER, which is the point, right? I see my hard work in my arms especially, and a bit in my quads. I'll continue my weight lifting regime, but it was nice to focus on it this month rather than swim/bike/run mileage.

Today is my Friday! I actually get to leave work at noon today because I'm off to Portland this weekend for my boyfriend's sister's wedding. Yes, she is getting married Halloween weekend and yes, her wedding is a costume party. I have a few finishing touches for my costume, I'll reveal what I'm going to be this weekend...unless I've already told you...I forget.

Candy aches

Daily Sweat: 45 min. spin class, ab work, 1,100 yard swim

Thanks for all your funny comments about my pumpkin pie incident. It isn’t just the pie these days; all sweets are haunting me. The mini Halloween candies are so cute and tasty and they’re just a bite, right? NO. All those bites add up to a stomach ache and spoiled workouts. No more candy bowl!

To work off the candy and pie, I went to spin class tonight! I haven’t been to spin class in a real long time because I’ve been cycling outside, but the weather here in the PNW is 50 degrees, windy and rainy, so inside it is!

4_6day::Source::

Yep, class was hard and I’m out of bicycling shape. Sweated like a pig and loved it in every way. I needed that swift kick in the butt to realize how out of shape I’m in to motivate me to get BACK into shape.

I had some time to kill until the pool opened, so I did some ab work. Gotta work on that 6 pack, right?

I hopped in the pool for 1,100 yards of arm burning fun. My arms are a little sore from my weight lifting yesterday and they sure loved the fact I was making them do stroke after stroke. But if you’ve read my blog for a bit, you know that I like the pain. It hurts so good.

A few things I’ve been meaning to mention:

  • Patrick has pulled together inspirational quotes and such on his Inspiration page. A lot of people contributed to it and reading through each person’s piece of motivation, you can really feel the passion behind it. Go check it out>>
  • I’m participating in P’s Not Your Average Adventure Race. I have something up my sleeve for this and I hope it works, cause I want to WIN!
  • Last and certainly not least, HELLO to any new followers! Thanks for visiting :)

How to spoil a workout

Daily Sweat: 3 mile run, 15 min. elliptical, weight lifting

I tried to have a killer workout today, but didn't feel right because I spoiled my workout. How do you spoil a workout? You simply eat pumpkin pie before hand...opps. My Mom made me TWO pumpkin pies for my birthday - one to eat last night at a family dinner and one just for ME to eat. So of course I come home from a long day at work and what do I do? Eat pumpkin pie, duh. With whipped cream, of course.

I will never eat pumpkin pie before running ever again. I learned my lesson.

Pool and Treadmill

Daily Sweat: Swim 900 yards (9x100) and 3.2 mile run

I was able to get into the pool today. Oh gosh, I have a lot of work to do to get back to where I was at the peak of my season, but I have to start again somewhere. Swimming is going to be my November goal - I really want to focus on it because I really do love the pool.

I also ran a nice little 3.2 miles in 30 minutes on the treadmill. For some reason when the Glee version of Telephone by Lady Gaga came on my Pandora, I kept increasing the speed. That song made me want to run!! Love it when songs do that.

The blustery and rainy weather is here in the PNW and I think it is here to stay. This just means indoor workouts, more time to wear my xtra tuff boots, soup making, more time spent in the sauna, etc.

Hope everyone had a good weekend

Relaxing birthday

Hi bloggies. I had a GREAT birthday. Thanks for all the birthday wishes in my last post - I love all my blog friends!  And ever since the invention of Facebook, I get SO many more birthday wishes from people I haven't talked to in years...weird, but nice of them to take the time to write on my wall.

It was my perfect day for sure. I woke up and got a workout in (3.3 mile run and some iron pumping) then I went to the DOL to get my drivers license renewed. Lucky  for me, there was absolutely NO line at the DOL which pretty much NEVER happens. Happy Birthday to me, I guess. :)

Then Aaron, my friend John and I rode our bikes downtown for a birthday beer and a yummy snack of curry fries. YUM! Then I picked up the house a tad, watched some TV on Hulu and we went for a nice "wake up" walk in the rain. I love walking in the rain!

My big plans for today were meeting up with friends at the North Fork Brewery which is on the Mt. Baker Highway and they have delish pizza and awesome beer, so that's what we had. It was a great night with good friends - the perfect birthday really.

Don't you love it when people sing Happy Birthday to you?....

The Masi prefers the open road

It has been way to long since my dear Masi bike has hit the open road. With a good, healthy break from my bike, I was ready to hop back on it today for a short jaunt.

Knowing that I had limited day light to deal with, I set out for a ride between 15 and 20 miles. I rode out one of my staple roads and turned around when my Cateye hit 10 miles. It is mostly flat with some gradual hills which was the perfect terrain for my first ride in some time.

I started to feel uncomfortable on my seat at 10 miles. I know the more I ride, the less saddle discomfort I have, so I kind of expected to be in pain for part of the ride. I think I need to try some chamois butter and see what the hype is all about.

I did my 20 miles in 1:16.  I don’t even care what my time or pace was – I rode my bike and thoroughly enjoyed it and that is all that matters. The air was cool, so long sleeves and full gloves were a must, but not cold enough to wear long pants. The skies were clear with some clouds rolling in and my legs felt good making that familiar push and pull circular motion.

I know I won’t be able to get in outdoor rides come daylight savings time cause there will be NO daylight in the hours I could ride. I am seriously thinking about investing in a trainer. I’m thinking a magnetic trainer over a fluid just because of the price. Anyone have any magnetic trainers they love?

Excited to get the Masi out on the open road one or two more times before we loose all the daylight.

Tomorrow, I will be one year older. I’m trying to make the most of my mid 20’s before I enter my late 20’s. :)

3 Things Thursday

It's Thursday and that means you get to hear 3 things from me:

1. I am craving my bike again. I took a nice hiatus from my bike after the Chuckanut Century and I'm happy to say that the break worked! I needed to get my bike from my BF's apartment to the new house so I ran there and then rode the bike back. Although I didn't have bike shorts, a helmet and bike shoes, it felt amazing to get on the bike. I see a bike ride or 6 in my near future.

2. We had a house warming party tonight with a good group of friends. The funny thing is, the house is still far from being put together. Oh well, we had salmon, halibut, roasted yams, brussel sprouts, bread, lots o' wine and good company.

3. I wanted to display my race bibs and medals in a cool, yet organized way in my new room and this is what I came up with. Do you display your race bibs or medals? I am very proud of the accomplishments of this year, so I don't feel I'm being a show off.

Aparently, I'm versatile

Diana tagged me as being a versatile blogger today because I've been versatile with my workouts. Thanks Diana! Everyone should read Diana's blog because 1) you'll LOL everytime you read her posts and 2) she lives in the same town as me!

This is my first "blog award" but I think it's more of a chain letter than an award...it's cool nonetheless.

Here are the rules:

1. You must thank the person who gave you the award and link back to their blog.

2. You must share 7 things about yourself.

3. Finally, you must pass this award along to other bloggers.

Here are 7 things you may or may not know about me:

1. I started this blog not as a fitness/triathlon blog, but rather a place for me to post random stuff. If you look at my first year worth of posts, they are mostly about baked goods...

2. I love spicy food. 5 Star or more for me at Thai restaurants

3. My day job is an Online Marketing Specialist for a value added reseller of mobile technology equipment. Or in english, barcode equipment.

4. I was one of two girls in the "Laptop Program" in 8th and 9th grade. We did all our work on our huge Toshiba laptops. I think I'm right there with Diana on the nerd alert. :)

5. I turn 26 on Saturday and I'm not really excited about it.

6. I like dough more than the cookie

7. I don't like seeing movies in the theater. One, they are way too expensive and two, I'd rather get them on Netflix and watch them in the comfort of my own home.

Listing seven things about me was a lot harder than I thought. Thanks again Diana!

Alright, here are the three lucky bloggers I'm tagging:
1. Alma from The Average Woman's Running Blog
2. Tressa & Track Coach from Training with Track Coach and His Adorable Wife
3. Patrick at The Road

My daily sweat today was AWESOME! I am back to regular workouts! It has been 2.5 weeks since I stopped swim/bike/run workouts and oh how I missed them. What I learned over this time - NEVER TAKE YOUR ABILITY TO WORKOUT FOR GRANTED! I ran from my NEW house to the Y, about 1 mile, then ran another 1.5 miles on the treadmill. I can definitely feel a loss in running stamina, hence the shorter run. I don't even care it was short though, cause it was a RUN! Ah, love it.

I also did another weight sesh, which brings my monthly total to 7 days (I did lift on Sunday in Vegas). Only 6 more days this month. I'm not sure if I can get all 6 days in with 11 days left in the month, but I'll at least 4 days.

Feels SO great to be back in it again.

Back to reality

Hi! I'm back from Vegas and SO ready to get back to my normal routine. I did have a great time in Vegas, but I don't think I'll be going back there any time soon, it's just not my scene.

Vegas likes: Seeing the show Zumanity, going to the spa, seeing the huge buildings lit up at night, hanging out with my girlfriends

Vegas dislikes: the cliche drunk girl yelling "I'm in Vegas, Bitch!", All other drunk people, how expensive it is, cigarette smoke everywhere, the fact that Vegas attracts ALL kinds of people (both good and very, very bad)

Over the 4 days in Vegas, I worked out 1 time. Boo. We did walk around quite a bit, so I wasn't too bummed. I am however, ready to get back at it this week.

I do get to start moving into my new house today, so I hope I can fit in a workout between moving stuff. *fingers crossed*

How was your weekend?

3 Things Thursday

This week has been, well, a week. Kind of long, but some exciting stuff happening in my world that I might share with you tomorrow. But for the time being, I'll keep you entertained by my 3 things:

1. Have you ever heard of the acronym DOMS? I hadn't until the other day when I was mentioning to my co-worker that my shoulders were sore from a workout two days ago. She said "feeling the DOMS?" And I said, "huh?" and she said "delayed onset muscle soreness" and I said, "oh!" Why is there an acronym for so many things these day?

2. Packing for Vegas is hard when all your clothes are in a storage unit. Not only are they in a storage unit, they are in the very, very BACK of the storage unit. My outfits in Vegas might be a little un-coordinated, but who cares? It's VEGAS!

3. I was having a tough time deciding whether or not to bring workout clothes to Vegas. I'm positive that Treasure Island has a gym (well, I sure hope they do) and I'd like to get an AM workout in Saturday and Sunday. I don't want working out to get in the way of my Vegas adventures, but I know I'll feel better if I get a sweat sesh in before I start to eat glorious foods and drink libations. So I have packed two workout outfits and my Brooks - if I pack them, I have to use them, right?

Post workout hydration…

I swear, I’m on a roll with these OktoberFast posts! Not only did I get in a weight lifting sesh tonight, which is part of my OktoberFast Challege, I washed it down with a pint of Elysian’s Night Owl Pumpkin Ale. It was way better than drinking Cytomax, let me tell you. :)

DSC_0273[1] Ha! Just noticing that blurred thing on the upper right of this pic is my bike. Sorry bike, I’ll ride you soon, but first, beer!

I’m not usually a huge fan of pumpkin ales, but this one is not like the others, or at least in my opinion it isn’t. It has two different tastes to me; one, it tastes like a good beer (nice colored, a slight bitterness) and two, it tastes like pure pumpkin juice with spices. Ah-maz-zing!

DSC_0274[1]      DSC_0275[1]

I splurged on the 22oz bottle (that’s the only size they had, no sixers) for a whopping $4.79! Yikes, that’s a lot for 1 beer. Actually, I take that back. If I go to Boundary Bay or any other brewery, pints of beers are around $4.50, so 22oz of beer for $4.79 is actually good. And it was totally worth every penny. I’d recommend it if you can find it. Elysian Brewery is in Seattle and I’m not sure how far they distribute. Oh wait, I just read on the bottle they also brew in Fort Collins, CO.

DSC_0276[1] 7lbs of pumpkin – heck yes!

I rocked the stairmaster again this evening. I got even more sweaty than yesterday - success. I was going to try out this new Total Power class at the Y, but when I saw that no one else was going, I just got turned off and went back to mastering the stairs.

In other blog news: Jon over at SwimCycloRun posted this great set of videos he found on how to do a flip turn. It is a series of 5 videos that takes you through each step of learning flip turns. When I get back in the pool next month, I am determined to learn to flip! Check out the videos>>

Children, pumpkins and spiders, oh my!

Hi Blog World. The past two days, I've reintroduced myself to a long lost friend: the Stairmaster. Not the one that looks like a case of stairs, the one that has small foot platforms that just go up and down.

In my pre-triathlon days, I used the stairmaster fairly often when I got tired of the ellipitcal and I have forgotten how good of a workout it can be. 30 minutes on that puppy at level 9 got me nice and sweaty. Although a challenging bike ride would have been preferable, the stairmaster did the trick today.

I've also completed 4 of my 13 days of weight training so far this month. 9 more to go! I usually get fast results in my triceps when I lift on a regular basis, so I got that going for me right now. I upped the weights in my session last night and I feel it today.

Since I'm participating in the OktoberFast Challenge, I have yet another Fall related activity I did this weekend! Aren't you excited?! I went to Spooner Farm in Puyallup, WA with the fam and we pumpkin hunted, got soaked by the rain and took a bagillion photos of my nephew, because he's flippin' cute.

My Boyfriend bought my nephew, Grayson, a pair of Xtra Tuffs for his 1st bday. Now that he is 2.5 he can finally wear them!

Nothing exciting

Since I'm not doing my usual workouts, I don't feel like I need to blog as often as I was. Really, there isn't anything interesting happening in my world right now. Two more weeks to go before I get back to my 'normal' workouts and I seriously can't wait! I saw people running yesterday and it looked SO FUN. I even have been staring at my bike with longing eyes. I miss you Masi! Soon enough, soon enough.

My pants feel the effects of less working out, boo. Trying to keep my eating under control, but when my Mom bakes chocolate chip cookies and they come out of the oven nice and warm, how can I possibly resist?!

This weekend, I went down to my parents to do the 6th annual father-daughter hiking day. My Dad and I have been doing a hike a year for the past 5 years and made it a 6th with a hike to Summit Lake near Mt. Rainier. Unfortunately, it rained and it was socked in, so no glorious views of Rainier, but it was a nice 5 mile hike with my Dad and sister. I didn't take any photos because it was raining and I didn't want to get my camera wet, but this is what it would have looked like if it was clear out:

::Source::

Nothing too exciting this week, so I'm not sure I'll be blogging much. I am going to go to a free Total Power class at the gym which I think is similar to Body Pump. If I like it, I'll probably join the class - it'll help with getting buff. Oh yeah, then I go to Vegas on Friday!!

What do you have planned this week?

Iron pumping and Ironman

Hey blog world - HAPPY FRIDAY!

I completed day 3 of my "get buff" challenge last night. I did a whole boatload of exercises and even upped the weight on a couple of them. I was hoping to wake up feeling nice and sore this morning, but I didn't. I felt my legs a tad when walking up the stairs, but other than that I feel the same as I did before I lifted. Bummer. I'm thinking I need to do one of two things, or both - add some new moves to my book of exercises and/or up the weights. Although half of the women in Oxygen Magazine scare/intimidate me, they do have a lot of new exercises I'd like to try. Trust me, I want to be toned, not look manly.

To my pleasant surprise, I felt comfortable to get on a recombant bike at the gym last night! I have been getting in my cardio on the ellipitcal or just walking and those two can get pretty dang boring. I was able to bike for 30 minutes at a medium resistance. Felt good, I'm going back for more tonight.

So I've been thinking this whole time that Ironman Kona would be broadcast (or at least parts of it) on one of the major news channels - ABC, ESPN, NBC, etc. - because, well, it is the championship race of my favorite sport, so why wouldn't it be?! Well, to my surprise, it isn't on TV... at all! Nuts. It is however, being streamed on universalsports.com at 9:30 Pacific (thanks for the info Erik!)

3 Things Thursday

1. I'm sick. I had to take yesterday off of work because I felt so yuck. I'm back at work today, but feel worse than yesterday. Maybe I shouldn't be at work...

2. I had some good reading material yesterday while I was sick. I picked up the latest Triathlete Magazine and really liked reading about the top contenders at Kona this year, especially the women. I'm going to my parents house this weekend and I hope to catch some of the Kona action while I'm there (I don't have cable TV). Are you planning on watching some of the race?

3. Found out I got the house that I applied to rent. What a relief! It can be stressful when you're not sure where you'll be living the next month. I get to move in the week of the 18th - really looking forward to it. Plus, in this house I'll be able to save money cause the rent is less than what I'm paying now. In a perfect world, I'd put the difference away and buy a tri bike for next year. Let's hope this is a perfect world, cause I want a tri bike!

OktoberFast Post: Apples!

Hi Friends! Thanks for all the great comments about my 3-week hiatus from triathlon workouts. You all are so radical!

In the spirit of the OktoberFast challenge - I'm going to share about a fall like activity I did this week. I went to an apple festival in Everson, WA at a local farm, Cloud Mountain Farm. They had probably about 80 different kinds of apple to taste plus different grapes, peaches, plums, blueberries, etc. I tried 6 or so different kinds of apples and found a few that I really liked: rubenstein and great alexander.

Cider Press

Pumpkins for sale

Aaron on a big pumpkin

We (Aaron and I) bought 10 lbs of apple for $15 - one bag of rubensteins and one bag of "baking mix" apples. Coincidentally, I watched part of the Botany of Desire last night and learned a lot about apples.
  • Did you know apples are originally from Khazakstan?
  • If you plant a seed from an apple, it'll probably turn out way different from the apple you obtained the seed from
  • Apples were not considered a health food until the early 1900's
Tonight Aaron made an apple crisp with our 'baking mix" apples and it turned out delicious. We're only lacking vanilla ice cream. :) I'm proud to be from Washington, where apples are EVERYWHERE, especially in eastern Washington. It's nice to have them all around with a bagillion varieties this time of year.

In workout world, I ellipticalled today for 30 minutes and finished up my stregth training from yesterday. 2 days down, 11 to go in the "get buff" challenge.

What is your favorite kind of apple?

Monday, October 4, 2010

Oh life (sigh)

Gosh, sometimes life can really throw a wrench in my nice little routine. I'm not going to go into details, but due to some reasons, I won't be doing the workouts you usually hear about on my blog over the next 3 weeks. I doubt I'll be running and definitely won't be swimming or biking. I will however, try to get creative and still stay somewhat active, so I can keep a somewhat girlish figure.

I will however, keep my October goal and stay on the OktoberFast Challenge. So, operation "get buff" is still underway. Speaking of, I went to the Y tonight and lifted a few parts of my body. I'm going to go back tomorrow and finish the rest. I also walked 2 miles on a 6.0 incline.

Yes, I am a little worried what these next few weeks will do to my running fitness that I've built up. Honestly, I just don't know what'll happen. I've heard that after about 2 weeks of not running, fitness levels start to drop. Lame. I really shouldn't be too mad, it could be a lot worse. This could have happened in the middle of July when I was in the middle of race season. So at least I don't have any races coming up and really, it's only 3 weeks!

Sorry, blogfriends, for being so vague, but this is a triathlon/running blog not "Megan is going to share her entire life with the internet" blog. :) I understand if you don't want to visit over the next 3 weeks because my workouts won't be triathlon or running focused, but please do come back at the end of the month! I'll be ready to get after it again. Maybe, just maybe I'll have the urge to get on my bike again! ;)

Get buff challenge - it's on!

On Friday I took the first step toward my goal of getting buff this month. I warmed up with a 5k run (9:20 pace) then hit the Y to lift.

I did most of my basic workouts, but also left a few out because I didn't want to jump head first into weight training and be totally sore the next day. I did:
  • Dips
  • Assisted pull ups
  • Leg Press
  • Leg extension
  • Lat pull downs
  • Seated row
  • Tricep push downs with rope attachment
  • Squats with 15lbs dumbells
  • Bicep curls
  • Shoulder raises
  • Tricep extensions
  • Ab work on stability ball
  • Chest press
Needless to say, I was sore on Saturday. It felt good to be sore though. I joined the OktoberFast challenge over at the Clydestale Project and my goal is to do 13 days of iron pumping this month. 3 per week, plus one for this first workout. I just want to get a little stronger while still running and biking and swimming. Really, deep down, I just want to feel a little more confident in my bathing suit when I go to Vegas in two weeks...

I got up this morning and went on a 4 mile run (9:19 pace) and will probably hit up the Y later on for yet another weight sesh. Now, I'm off to an Apple festival at a local farm to buy a boat load of apple and drink sweet, sweet cider!

Ptarmigan ridge

I hiked Ptarmigan ridge, near Mt. Baker today with Aaron and my friend Kirsten. I think everyone else and their mom had the idea of hiking too, because the parking lot at Artist Point was pretty much full. I love that people like to get out and see the wilderness, but half the cars up there aren’t there to hike…they’re just there because they wanted to go on a scenic drive…what a waste of gas!!

Anyway, Ptarmigan ridge has been on my “to-do” list of hikes for awhile and I’m glad I finally got to cross it off. It is a 4 mile out trail that follows a ridge to the base of the Coleman Pinacle near Mt. Baker. To sum it up in a one word: scenic. Well all hikes up near Mt. Baker are scenic… Spectacular views of Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, Table Mountain, even Glacier Peak way in the distance. The best part is that I scouted out some really awesome terrain that I want to hike out to in the winter and get some good pow turns in on my snowboard. If only I had a split board…

The hike itself isn’t hard at all – pretty much flat with a few gradual climbs. That is my favorite kind of hike because you don’t have to walk downhill hardly at all. I would way rather walk uphill than down – less stress on my knees.

The hike was a nice way to get outside and get a good, but not super hard workout in. I always underestimate how tired I get from just walking 7 miles or so…I’m pooped.

Here are some photos I took along the hike, enjoy.

4 Things Friday

I started my 3 things Thursday yesterday, but never got to finish it, hence the 4 things Friday.

1. I have not worked out the past two days because I spent my afternoons and evenings moving, which is a workout in itself. I'm moving stuff into a storage unit until I hear if I get this really awesome, cute house and then I get to move it all again. I have a lot of stuff, but somehow it all fit into a 5' x 10' storage unit thanks to my boyfriends amazing packing skills. In the interim, I'm staying at my boyfriend's house/living out of my car - should be a fun few weeks...

2. I was 3 miles away from logging 100 running miles for the month of September. I really wanted to get those last miles in yesterday, but I spent from 4pm-9pm moving and I'm not a night time runner. Dang, so close!

3. Diana has an awesome giveaway on her site and I'm shamelessing plugging it to get another entry.

4. It's a new month, so a new goal must be set! I'm going to set mine around weight training. I haven't focused on weight training throughout the race season simply because my other workouts were doing the trick. I want to get in 3 full body weight sessions a week during the month of October. Time to get buff.
